ZANTAC Lawsuit
What You Need to Know
What is Zantac?
Zantac is a medication used to treat acid reflux, heartburn, and ulcers. It contains ranitidine hydrochloride, an H2 blocker that reduces stomach acid. Millions of people have used Zantac since the 1980s, both over-the-counter and by prescription.
Why the Lawsuits?
Recent investigations found that Zantac contains high levels of a chemical called NDMA, which is a potential carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). This chemical can increase over time, especially if the medication is stored improperly. As a result, Zantac users have filed lawsuits claiming that the drug caused cancer.
Current Legal Developments:
- Connecticut: A court denied motions to dismiss Zantac lawsuits, allowing claims to proceed. The court found it had jurisdiction over the case, rejecting arguments that it did not.
- Florida: A judge rejected plaintiffs’ expert testimony in a prostate cancer case, making Florida less favorable for Zantac lawsuits.
- Pennsylvania: Concerns about potential conflicts of interest involving Judge Joshua Roberts were raised, but he decided not to recuse himself from the case.
- Illinois: A mistrial was declared in a prostate cancer case due to the jury’s inability to reach a verdict.
Cancer Risks Linked to Zantac: The FDA found that Zantac and its generic versions can contain harmful levels of NDMA, which is associated with:
- Bladder cancer
- Liver cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Stomach (gastric) cancer
- Esophageal cancer
Products Containing Ranitidine: Besides Zantac, other products with ranitidine include:
- Acid Control
- Acid Reducer
- Heartburn Relief
- Wal-Zan
- Zantac 150 (and various strengths)
Status of Zantac Lawsuits:
- Settlements & Verdicts: No settlements or jury verdicts have been reached yet. The first trials and bellwether cases are ongoing to help understand the potential value of these cases.
- Multi-District Litigation (MDL): Over 800 cases are pending in the MDL, with trials scheduled in various states.
Do You Qualify for a Zantac Lawsuit? You might be eligible if:
- You used Zantac or another ranitidine product regularly for at least 6 months.
- You were diagnosed with bladder, liver, pancreatic, stomach, or esophageal cancer.
